The Bells is a free outdoor public theatre extravaganza. It combines live art, physical theatre, dance, acrobatics and music.
Conceived by the 5 Angry Men theatre group in the 1990's The Bells - now a multi-generational ensemble has toured the world across three decades.
They continue to ring The Bells - no matter what...
The 60-minute performance demands enormous endurance and discipline from the performers.
To begin, the cast work their way through the crowd on black vintage bicycles - ringing their bicycle bells as they process through the onlookers to the bell-tower. Their task begins and instantly, the air is full of flying bodies and the sound of enormous church bells - commanding the attention of any and all within sight or earshot.
At its heart though, The Bells is a task. An enormous creative task that is being tackled by the performers. The nature of the task seems mysterious - perhaps the performers themselves are unclear about what it is - however they attack their work with manic determination. The results are at once comic, triumphant, tragic and absurd.
The game is not lost, or won until the last bells goes. John Curtain
