Two venues. One home for live performance in Wagga Wagga.
The Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre is a place for live performance, big ideas, local stories and shared experiences. Located on the foreshore of Wollundry Lagoon, the Civic Theatre has been part of the cultural life of Wagga Wagga since opening its doors in 1963. Today, it is a much-loved cultural facility of Wagga Wagga City Council and a home for live entertainment in the Riverina.
From theatre, music, dance, comedy and opera to family shows, community performances and something a little different, our program brings local artists and community groups together with outstanding touring productions from across Australia and beyond. Our 491-seat theatre provides a welcoming space for audiences to experience the magic of live performance, while our venue also supports conferences, events and performances created right here in Wagga Wagga.
But we believe the theatre is about more than what happens on stage.
Through our education and participation programs, we create opportunities for children, young people, teachers, emerging artists and the wider community to get involved, have a go and discover their own creative potential. Our Education Season connects live performance with learning, while programs such as Plug + Play support young musicians and performers as they take their next steps.
We’re also proud to be a place where local stories find their voice. We work alongside local artists, community organisations and creative groups to provide opportunities to perform, create, connect and share their work with audiences. At the same time, we bring some of the best touring artists and productions to Wagga Wagga, giving Riverina audiences access to performances they might otherwise have to travel to see.
The Civic Theatre family is growing.
Since July 2026, the Riverina Playhouse has been under the management of Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre, bringing two unique performance venues together as part of one creative home for the region.
Located directly opposite the Civic Theatre on Tarcutta Street and beside the Murrumbidgee River, the Riverina Playhouse is an intimate 211-seat theatre with tiered seating around the stage. Its smaller scale creates a different kind of live performance experience and gives us even more opportunities to present theatre, music, comedy, children’s shows, film screenings, talks and community events.
With professional lighting, sound and projection systems, backstage dressing rooms and green room facilities, and a light-filled foyer overlooking the Murrumbidgee River, the Playhouse is a versatile space for both performers and audiences.
Together, the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre and Riverina Playhouse give artists, producers and our community more stages, more possibilities and more reasons to experience live performance in Wagga Wagga.
